Lesson Overview

Phototropism has a critical influence over plants constantly seeking the sun's energy to power its metabolism. In this lesson, students will experiment with light to locate the tipping point for phototropism.

Goals

  • Students will be able to define phototropism and its effects on plant development.

Outcomes

Students will experiment with lighting in order to determine the tipping point for phototropism.

Activity

There is an epic battle unfolding before your very eyes in the Edible Learning Lab. This battle rivals those of Marvel Comics but without all the carnage and destruction.

Every plant is under the influence of gravity and light. The natural process dictates that plants will develop roots that grow toward the source of gravity and foliage that develops away from it.

Seems natural. But growers can harness the power of light to compel plants to grow toward the light source. This process, known as phototropism, is used to produce horizontally oriented plants in a vertical growing system like the hydroponic towers.

In the absence of phototropism, plants in a vertical plane will grow out initially and then up moving away from gravity. This produces plants with an “L” shape rather than those with the desired “I” characteristic.

Prove the tipping point for phototropism, the point when light overcomes gravity. Experiment with the duration of active lighting in 24 hours when plants show evidence of growth/orientation towards the lights at the distance specified by Bright Agrotech.
