Teaching Primer
There is no shortcut for experience in the kitchen. Some dishes can take a lifetime to truly perfect and that perfection is often fleeting.
So teaching Students the basics of cooking in a working kitchen is a practice that must be repeated over and over. The Teaching Kitchen Lessons are a great starting point for that journey.
Working in teams, Students will collaboratively execute recipes using a variety of techniques and implements. They will learn their way around the kitchen and begin to find proficiency with the basic tools of the trade. More importantly, they will find a level of comfort for the process and order of the kitchen.
This lesson can be applied to any recipe, not just those provided on Modern Steader. Be creative and embrace the pace with which your Students are building skills. Challenge them with new ingredients and expand the flavor profiles. There is no limit to what they can learn!

Method
Introduction (10 minutes)
Begin the lesson with a review of the ingredients, implements, and techniques required for the recipe. Describe the steps outlined in the recipe with the Students. Time permitting, you can execute the recipe first and then have the Students do so afterward. Otherwise, assist each team with techniques as needed.
Activity (20 minutes)
Assign the Students to a team and a station. Assemble the ingredients at a central location and have the Students gather what they need, one team at a time. Students should then establish the mis en place for their station by organizing their implements and ingredients.
Begin the process, describing each step of the recipe as you go and being sure to keep all teams on the same progression.
If the recipe is for something that is to be enjoyed immediately, come together as a Class and enjoy it together.
Discussion (10 minutes)
What was the hardest technique to execute? How did it taste? Was it fun to make?
Assessment (5 minutes)
Use the following questions to assess the Students before and after the lesson. Tally the responses of the group in the Assessment Tracking Log for comparison:
- By a show of hands, how many of you have made this recipe before?
- Now that you know how to make this recipe, how many of you think you could teach your family to make this?
