Natural processes are hard to beat but occasionally man finds a way to coax the process along a little faster. This lesson challenges students to improve on the natural composting process.

Method

Mother Nature does a wonderful job of soil building. Look at the soil below a tree, preferably in a naturally wooded area. It’s built by years of fallen leaves that are transformed by natural forces into rich and vibrant soil.

How could you mimic nature in the Lab? How could the natural process be brought indoors? And is there any way to improve on this perfect process?
