Sometimes systems can be integrated to accomplish more than one goal. In this lesson, students will explore ways to harness the heat created during the composting process for other uses.

Method

Some farmers use the composting process as a means of producing and harnessing heat for other uses. Whole Systems Design in Maine uses the Jean Pain Method to heat the soil in their greenhouse to extend their season in early spring and late fall. Design a system that is similar to extend your seasons for an outdoor raised bed.
