Lesson Overview

At Modern Steader, we imagine a food system where everyone has the option of locally grown and organically produced food. In this lesson, students will discuss what it would take to local our food system once again.

Method

Go inside the 2015 World Fair installation. With food production at the center of such a notable event, discuss what it will take for food production to revert from a global model where produce routinely travels 1500 miles from field to plate back to a local model.

Victory Gardens once provided 40% of fruits and vegetables consumed by Americans. It was all local, all organic.

What personal, political, and economic changes would such a change be contingent upon? Do you believe a local system is even possible today?
