Plants that are fully exposed to the sun will find it challenging to thrive with higher soil temperatures and moisture loss from evaporation. This lesson allows students to experiment with different mulches to discover the most effective type.

Not all mulches are created equal. Leaves, wood chips, bark, and geotextiles are all viable mulches for specific purposes. But what is the best mulch for use in the Lab?

Test various mulches to determine which is most effective at reducing moisture loss and lowering soil temperature in the raised planters, both key strategies for optimizing plant production is the hotter summer months.
